Letter to the Editor: Tool Used To Unlock Gates

 

Susan,

 

At your request, here's a photo of the rudimentary tool I found on the alley side of our back gate recently.  Residents may recognize this as the kind of tool a gardener uses to unlatch gates on properties where he's permitted to work.  My excellent gardener has no cause to use, and does not in fact use, any such tool to unlatch our back gate because it remains locked at all times. Our gardener has no cause to go into our alley, nor does he in fact, go into our alley in the performance of his job.  As our Coronado Police Chief Lou Scanlon explained during our SPEAK OUT CORONADO town hall meeting on strengthening our island through Neighborhood Watch, criminals are smart enough to use these tools, too.

 

I encourage residents to be alert to their surroundings and if they find potential evidence of thwarted criminal activity, then let our Men and Women in Blue know.  Citizens may help others by communicating facts to our Police Department that might deter future criminal activity.

Independent Redistricting Commission A Step Closer

 

The Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to seek changes in the state elections code that would allow San Diego County to establish an independent redistricting commission of retired judges to draw the boundaries of the County’s five supervisorial districts.

Meet "Ashley"

 

Ashley is about one year old, a female Heinz variety, tan in color.

 

Nobody can quite decide what designer breed she is, but Chihuahua and Beagle seem to top the list as possibilities. Labels aren't important to our girl, she is equal opportunity; Miss Ashley loves everybody. Her teeth, eyes and coat all sparkle as does her personality.  

 

Miss Ashley is still young and will need some manner training, but she's a quick study and wants to please. This young lady is pretty cute and will make you smile from ear to ear on your first meeting. 

 

You can get to know Ashley and other furry friends needing homes at the Coronado Animal Care Facility (ACF) located on 1395 First Street, next to the Ferry Landing. Hours of operation are 9am - 4pm, every day but major holidays. All cats and dogs will have had their spay/neuter, current immunizations and microchip upon adoption. California DAR To Dedicate "The Birthplace Of Naval Aviation" Tomorrow

 

 

The California State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (CSDAR) will be placing a special marker at Centennial Park tomorrow, Saturday, January 28th. The marker is dedicated to such greats as inventor and entrepreneur Glenn Curtiss, who opened a flying school on North Coronado Island, and Navy Lieutenant Theodore G. "Spuds" Ellyson, the first Naval Aviator. I have had the privilege to get a preview of the dedication marker and it is absolutely beautiful.

 

The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children. DAR members volunteer more than 250,000 hours annually to veteran patients, award thousands of dollars in scholarships and financial aid each year to students, and support schools for underserved children with annual donations exceeding one million dollars. You may not know this but there are many DARs living in Coronado and walking amongst us. I am sure that several of them will be present at the dedication. As a member of the DAR, I know I will be.

 

 

The Coronado community is invited to witness this moment in history, as the marker will designate this hallowed ground as the "The Birthplace of Naval Aviation". You won't want to miss this.

Navy Region Southwest Culinary Competition

Release #: 01-12


WHAT:  Naval Base Coronado will host the annual Commander, Navy Region Southwest Culinary Competition.

WHY:  The competition allows participants a chance to showcase their talents, creativity and culinary skills. The winner of the competition moves on to the Navy Installations Command Culinary Competition in Washington D.C.

WHEN:  January 30, 2012 at 10 a.m. to 12 a.m.

WHERE:  Naval Amphibious Base Coronado Galley (on the bay side)

Six two-person teams have two hours to prepare two entrees; with beef tenderloin and chicken. The secret ingredient will be announced on the day of the event. Judges will evaluate each dish on taste, knife work, cooking method, presentation and proper safety and sanitation. This year's judges are: Captain Yancy Lindsey, Commanding Officer of Naval Base Coronado; Executive Chefs Dorance Aldridge, Joaquin Cueva, Nydia Ekstrom and Celebrity Guest Chef "Sam the Cooking Guy".

New Bicycle Advisory Committee Already On A Roll

 

On December 5, 2011, the Coronado City Clerk swore in the new members of the Coronado Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC). The committee is composed of two city staff: Principle Engineer Jim Newton and Recording Secretary Nancy Reynolds; and seven committee members. The seven members are Pat Callahan, Bruce Davidson, Dot Harms, Larry Hofstetter, Bruce Johnson, Dan Orr and Trisha Trowbridge.

Mr. Hofstetter was elected to be the Chairman of the BAC and Mr. Johnson will be the Vice Chairman.

Here are the introductions for the group as was recorded in the Coronado Bicycle Advisory Committee Minutes of December 5th:

This follow-up to the Ad Hoc Bicycle Committee accomplished two things: the creation of a Bicylcle Master Plan and then the creation of the Bicycle Advisory Committee.

 

The committee's primary purpose is to advise City Council and staff on bicycle-related matters. This might include items as basic as bicycle parking or as elaborate as future requests for bicycle facilities and projects. The BAC could also host bicycle eduction programs or events, encouraging people to bicycle in Coronado.

 

There are six goals listed in the Bicycle Master Plan Overview:

 

The committee is working on an agenda item to discuss "Committee Goals — Long Term and Short."

Do You Want To Be A Ham?

 

CERO (Coronado Emergency Radio Operators) met last night at the EOC (Emergency Operations Center) at the Police station for their monthly meeting. Did you know that Coronado has a ham radio group and one of the best repeater systems for receiving and sending emergency messages in the County? Here are a few photos taken last night and submitted by CERO member Barbara Denny.

Fred has a zillion QRZ cards from around the world that are sent after a contact is made. Here are just a few that he brought last night.

CERO would like to invited all interested persons to attend CERO meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6pm in the EOC. Ham operators are the communicators in emergency situations when cell phones and land lines no longer operate. When all is silent, hams are still communicating vital information.

Rain Prompts Runoff Advisory for Beaches

 

Coronado Beach

A general advisory has been issued for county beaches following the recent rain.

 

The Department of Environmental Health warns bacteria levels can rise significantly in ocean and bay waters, especially near storm drains, creeks, rivers and lagoon outlets that discharge urban runoff.  The runoff may contain large amounts of bacteria from a variety of sources, such as animal waste, soil and decomposing vegetation.

 

While many coastal storm drains are permanently posted with white metal warning signs, additional temporary warning signs are not posted for general advisories.   Activities such as swimming, surfing and diving should be avoided in all coastal waters for 72 hours following rain.  This includes all coastal beaches and all of Mission Bay and San Diego Bay. 

 

The increased bacteria levels can continue after a rainstorm depending upon the intensity of the storm, volume of runoff and ocean conditions.

CERT Members Learn About Emergency Tools To Use On Their Smart Phones

 

The new CERT Board held their first meeting of the year 2012 on January 19th. The room was packed as members showed up to learn about emergency apps that could be used on their Smart Phones. Thanks to CERT member Barbara Denny for the following photos.

 

Vice President Jim Blasy greeted everyone and brought them hot cocoa and tea.

 

If your cell phone doesn't work, then your land line might work. Keep a classic phone handy in case of emergency. President Jacqui Hardt and member Hal Moody show off their phones.

 

Board Member Gary Smith did a wonderful presentation on all the downloadable, informational guides available on your phone and through the internet—such as FEMA, iTriage, Disaster Alert, Quake Watch and 5.0 Radio Pro to name just a few.

 

 

Board Member Susan Heavilin followed up with emergency gadgets that you could get to use on your phone. She showed them a map to find their exact location, flashlight, Easy Trails app to plot a GPS trail and record photos to exact locations for a search & rescue  and an application called Word Lens which can translate Spanish signage into English.

 

Then the participants got into four groups and tried out all the applications. Some loaded new apps on their phones right then.

 

It was good to see so many CERT members, including former Board Member Marv Heinze and his wife Jill Olin.

 

Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the hands-on instruction. It was a great way to kick off the new year!

Crime In Coronado: 01.11.12 - 01.22.12

 

Another crime report has been released and this report shows how widespread it is rather than occuring in just one area. It runs from the 600 block to the Hotel del Coronado, then from Glorietta Boulevard to the Shores.

 

A Common Sense reader commented on the last crime report—

"With this recent focus on Coronado's crime stats, I'd be very interested to see crime stats from back 10 or so years. Is there actually an increase in crime here in town? And if so, for what crimes?"

 

I'm working on getting that information for you.
